[A new voice comes from the communicators. It is low and just a bit gravelly, with a gently lilting accent. For a moment it is muffled, as if someone has his hand over the microphone, but then it clears up.]

Ah, hello? Is it true that if I speak into this device, people can hear me from afar?

[There is a short, disbelieving laugh.]

It's marvelous. Whoever invented it should sell it to my people. They would become hideously wealthy in days.

[Action spam for anyone on level 4.]

[The man walking down the corridor has the strangest eyes. One is pale and silvery; the other is not so much brown as golden. Each color alone could be considered beautiful, if unusual; but both set in his face they end up making him look jarringly uneven, rather than beautiful. He's also got small gold hoop earrings in each ear and a hoard of rings on his fingers. His simple travelling clothes look old, but they are clean and look as if they may once have been expensive. He's got a long stride, but he is walking unhurriedly. In his hand is the communicator, which his thumb keeps grazing over. If you approach him, he will smile and greet you.]

No. I...don' think so, only a few people know back in my Universe. It is a private matter. [Susan's voice is hesitant. It's not something she shared. Talia knew, when she was Talia--Marcus new, Sinclair and Sheridan knew. Her mother had taught her well to keep it hidden as much as possible. Sophie Ivanova's suicide, brought on by the PsiCorps drugs she had to take after she was discovered to be a telepath herself cemented that need for secrecy.]

I'd rather people didn't know, same as you. [She steepled her fingers and focused on him carefully. She wasn't going to tell anyone about him, and hopefully he wouldn't tell anyone about her. She didn't want the complications.]

I can only sense them when they're trying to scan me, really. If I'm lucky I can block them or at least attempt to hide my thoughts, but that's about it.

[Susan understood that they both had equal things to lose, but she'd have kept his secret anyway even if he hadn't known hers. If the man wanted his privacy, she'd give him that much and more. Susan let out a breath that ghosts across the surface of her coffee. The tightness that had settled between her shoulder blades eased a little.]

I suppose balance is necessary and there is always two ends to a secret. We each have something that needs to be kept away from others.

[But that said, there were other people on this ship who had their own sort of mental talents.]

There is at least one telepath--a mind reader--aboard, if you need to know. His name is Charles Xavier. There may be more, but I've managed to keep my head down as far as anyone else is concerned.

[Susan made a soft sound of agreement that mixed with quiet relief.]

Charles is little more than a boy himself, I guess. Blue eyes, dark hair. Powerful, I think, as far as being a telepath is concerned. From what I've gathered, powerful enough to make a friend of his wear some sort of telepathy blocking helmet. At least I think that's what it is.

He's a Warden, his Inmate is a guy named Gaeta from what I recall.

There is a girl, Arkady, who is a telepath I believe. But I've actually met Charles. [She shrugged, heard of and met were two different things.]

There are others who may be telepathic in nature to some degree, but I haven't done much mingling. I try to...keep to myself, I guess.

I'm guessing that's probably going to be a yes. But since I haven't met her, I have no idea. We're on a ship, in close quarters with people who have vast or at least significant mental abilities. {Susan frowned.] There's only so much hiding we can do.

Being a telepath can get you imprisoned, drugged up to suppress your abilities, or working for some pretty screwed up people. The drugs are worse than anything.

[Her expression was blank for a moment.]

The Corps found out about my mother when she was in her thirties. She didn't want to join them, and refused to go to prison, so she took the drugs. Ten years of taking those drugs, every week, and then she killed herself rather than living an empty shell of a life.

Being open about what I am, even if it's not much, is not going to happen. Too much at stake.
