[A new voice comes from the communicators. It is low and just a bit gravelly, with a gently lilting accent. For a moment it is muffled, as if someone has his hand over the microphone, but then it clears up.]

Ah, hello? Is it true that if I speak into this device, people can hear me from afar?

[There is a short, disbelieving laugh.]

It's marvelous. Whoever invented it should sell it to my people. They would become hideously wealthy in days.

[The man walking down the corridor has the strangest eyes. One is pale and silvery; the other is not so much brown as golden. Each color alone could be considered beautiful, if unusual; but both set in his face they end up making him look jarringly uneven, rather than beautiful. He's also got small gold hoop earrings in each ear and a hoard of rings on his fingers. His simple travelling clothes look old, but they are clean and look as if they may once have been expensive. He's got a long stride, but he is walking unhurriedly. In his hand is the communicator, which his thumb keeps grazing over. If you approach him, he will smile and greet you.]

[The sound coming from the communicator makes him jump; it sounds so clear and so human. He cannot fathom it. He does not look directly at the video screen; to be honest, he doesn't even know where it is. His own camera is still off.]

Hm, there should be a button...everyone's communicator is a little different, so I'm not positive on what your button would look like. Mine is an image of a video camera, buuut I'm gonna guess you don't have those in Lienid. [Small laugh.]

[Well, text he can understand. Though he doesn't see how this little device can write them. There are many buttons, but no paper and no ink, and no pen. How does anyone expect to write letters with just a square of metal?

[ Lua's down at the end of the hall, finally stepping out to look for Richie. She can't believe she's put it off this long, but hopes his absence is just him being a dumb kid or mad at her for some reason she doesn't get. She's getting a really bad feeling about this, but stops for a minute at the new guy. Eyes or not, she gives him a smile, one that says she's not even thinking about being dangerous or getting in his way. ]

[ She can't yet tell he's blind, so she shrugs and looks up for a moment in thought. ]

Depends on what interests you. [ A pause, like it isn't quite enough. ] Seems like you're all right with the place so far.

[ There's a hidden question there, one she doesn't expect him to answer consciously: "Which side of the bars are you on?" ]

[That may just have been the most commonly heard sentiment in his life. When he had been younger the constant questions had made him impatient, but he was quite accustomed to it by now. He smiled down at the child before him, orienting his eyes briefly to her face.]
